The AreaSutton Courtenay

Sutton Courtenay is one of South Oxfordshire’s most highly regarded and sought after locations. A pretty village with a stunning green and many period and thatched properties; there is a real sense of community. This is very much a village which retains the best qualities of traditional village life. Perched on the banks of the River Thames, there are three pubs to choose from, a village shop, petrol station and a garage.

Commuting to London or Oxford couldn’t be easier. Orwell House is exceptionally well placed, with Didcot Parkway Station only 4.1 miles away and trains to London Paddington from 37 minutes.

The closest town is Abingdon which sits in a desirable position on the River Thames and includes a stunning market square and attractive architecture, such as the County Hall, built from Oxfordshire Limestone and believed to be designed by Sir Christopher Wren. This is market town living at its finest. Oxford itself is just over 10 miles away.

Bordered by the rolling Chilterns and the magnificent Berkshire Downs, the idyllic has inexhaustible options for lovers of the outdoors, with highlights being the River Thames and Wittenham Clumps.

There is a wide and excellent choice of both state and private schools, including a Primary School within Sutton Courtenay.

Orwell House, Sutton CourtenayAbout this home

Built and designed by the renowned Andrew Herring in 2009, Orwell House is a modernist masterpiece. Tucked away in a private position within this highly sought after South Oxfordshire village, Orwell House is an oasis of calm and tranquillity – a peaceful escape from the outside world. The house was built on the concept of organic modernism, by utilising natural materials including plants, water, thatch, oak and stone which play against more modern materials such as glass and polished concrete with crisp, fresh, light reflecting walls and ceilings. There is a stunning flow between open spaces, and an abundance of light, with large areas of glazing and high ceilings. As well as being a design masterpiece, at over 7,000 sq ft, this is a substantial family home, ideally suited to modern living.

Orwell House is entered through a Corten steel electric entrance gate on to a large gravel drive, complete with a triple open-bay garage. The beautiful gardens were designed by Sarah Eberle, (winner of gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show in 2006 and 2007), incorporating modern design, privacy and numerous outdoor spaces, and stunning specimen trees and plants. A particular highlight of the garden is the Corten steel garden area, complete with a fire pit and olive trees. The Japanese slate heated swimming pool is also a triumph of design, providing a calming outlook from the house. The separate pool house can also be used as additional annexe accommodation if required.
