Designing for generations

How thoughtful restoration can add long term value without losing soul

There is something deeply reassuring about a house that feels as though it has always been there – settled, balanced and entirely at ease in its surroundings. Designing for generations is about preserving that sense of permanence while ensuring the property continues to support modern family life effortlessly.

At Sims Hilditch, our work is rooted in respect for architectural heritage and the belief that good design should feel timeless rather than temporary. From country estates to townhouses, we begin by listening carefully to the building itself; its history, craftsmanship and original detailing provide a framework that guides every design decision.

Where possible, we restore rather than replace. Cornicing is repaired, panelling reinstated, joinery and plasterwork are meticulously revived. We collaborate with skilled artisans to match finishes and preserve traditional techniques. These details may seem subtle, but collectively they maintain the integrity of a property and integrity is what sustains value over time.

However, a home cannot simply be preserved, it must also evolve. The way we live today is different from when many historic houses were first built. Kitchens are now the heart of the home, designed for gathering as much as cooking. Bathrooms have become calm, restorative spaces. There is a need for flexibility and for rooms that can adapt as children grow, as working patterns shift and as families expand and contract.

Thoughtful restoration allows for this evolution without disrupting character. We rework layouts to improve flow and natural light, introduce discreet joinery that enhances storage and integrate modern systems carefully so they support comfort without drawing attention to themselves. The aim is always for new interventions to feel entirely at ease within their surroundings.

Materiality plays a central role in creating homes that last. We favour natural materials such as timber, stone, linen and wool, chosen for their ability to age gracefully. These finishes acquire patina and depth, telling their own story over time. Within this considered framework, interiors are composed to enhance and elevate art, antiques and personal collections – allowing colour, texture and form to resonate without distraction. We work closely with our clients to integrate existing treasures and, where appropriate, to source new additions, ensuring every element feels intentional and curated.

Sustainability is equally integral to designing for longevity, particularly in the selection of furniture, fixtures and equipment. We prioritise pieces that are made to last – crafted from responsibly sourced materials, built with integrity and designed to age gracefully rather than be replaced. From bespoke joinery and upholstery to lighting and hardware, we consider provenance, durability and the lifecycle of every element.

As a certified B Corp, we view this as both a responsibility and a guiding principle, holding ourselves to rigorous standards of social and environmental performance. By championing thoughtful sourcing, supporting skilled makers and investing in quality over short-term solutions, we create interiors where every layer is chosen not only for its beauty, but for its lasting impact.
